Set Up Running: The Life of a Pennsylvania Railroad Engineman by John W. Orr,
Set Up Running tells the story of a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive engineer, Oscar P. Orr, who operated steam-powered freight and passenger trains throughout Central Pennsylvania and South Central New York. From 1904 to 1949, Orr sat at the controls of many famous steam locomotives; moved trains loaded with coal, perishables, and other freight; and encountered virtually every situation a locomotive engineer of that era could expect to see. John W. (Jack) Orr, Oscar's son, tells his father's story, which begins at the Central Steam Heating Plant in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Oscar operated nearly every kind of steam locomotive the Pennsylvania Railroad owned, working from the bottom of the roster to the top position (number one in seniority). Orr has an ear for detail and a vivid memory. He tells about his father's first encounter with an automobile along the right-of-way, about what it was like to operate a train in a blizzard, and about the difficulties railroadmen encountered in stopping a trainload of tank cars loaded with oil in order to take on water and coal -- among many other stories in the author's large memory bank. This compelling railroad history will enthrall not only everyone in the railroad community but also the general reader interested in railroads and trains, past and present.

A Sampling of Penn Central: Southern Region on Display by Jerry Taylor, X
A Sampling of Penn Central: Southern Region on Display by Jerry Taylor, X
The Penn Central came into being with the merger of the New York Central and Pennsylvania lines in 1968 and ended with the formation of Conrail in 1976. A Sampling of Penn Central is illustrated with over 200 photographs taken between 1970 and 1972. Their detailed captions document the 5,000 miles of PC's Southern Region, an especially volatile area. It was here in the Midwest that the Pennsylvania and New York Central lines overlapped most abrasively. Redundancy was rampant. As a result, intensive planning and major new capital projects were required to realize maximum operating efficiencies. A Sampling of Penn Central is more than a photographic documentation of the difficulties of the merger: every nook and cranny of this vast region is explored in detail. Jerry Taylor thoroughly dissects operations at the Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis terminals, which were make-or-break ventures. Perhaps most important of all, this new edition gives Taylor the opportunity to reflect on those hectic days. With the benefit of almost 30 years' hindsight, his new introduction helps the reader understand the successes and failures of those crucial days for the nation's premier railroad.

Central Pennsylvania accent - The Central Pennsylvania accent is closely related to Western Pennsylvania speech, which is generally referred to as Pittsburgh English, although the accent extends beyond just the city of Pittsburgh. It bears little resemblance to the Southeastern Pennsylvania accent spoken in the Philadelphia area, which is more similar to New York and New Jersey speech than to accents spoken in the rest of Pennsylvania.

Central Railroad of Pennsylvania - The Central Railroad of Pennsylvania was an attempt by the Central Railroad of New Jersey to avoid certain New Jersey taxes on their Pennsylvania lines. The tax dodge failed, and CRP operations were merged back into those of the CNJ.

Central Pennsylvania College - Central Pennsylvania College is a small (850 undergraduate students) business oriented college located in the suburban Harrisburg, Pennsylvania neighborhood of Summerdale.

Pymatuning Central, Pennsylvania - Pymatuning Central is a census-designated place located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,216.
