Set in postwar Switzerland, Fleur Jaeggy's eerily beautiful novel begins simply and innocently enough: "At fourteen I was a boarder in a school in the Appenzell". It's still the most glorious of all versions, a grandly realized epic vision with a sense of wonder and magnificent fantasy landscape of deep, rich colors, like a painting come to life. Joseph Calleia play the greedy villain with his usual conniving flair. Mikos Rosza wrote the gorgeous score.
